So what do you think? At the risk of affecting the vote, I think they've found some good singers (albeit only good in a traditional sense, there's loads of great singers with "unconventional" voices that wouldn't survive five seconds on one of those shows) but i just wish there was more emphasis on original material and playing their own instruments. Or am I just a pretentious, indie rock snob? You decide people. Oh and its called Pop Idol over here. Why do you americans have to put "American" in front of everything? Suppose we should be grateful this sites not called "Request an American Song"  Cheesy

It all depends on what you value in music.  Many people just want to hear singers with good voices sing popular songs that they didn't write themselves, and there's nothing wrong with that.  In that way, I think of the singer-types more as "entertainers" than "artists."

Other people, like you and I, value the creativity and artistic ingenuity in the composition, instrumentation, and production of music over the performance elements of music (like being a really good guitar technical player or singer for example).

For you, they should make a show called "Songwriting Idol," and automatically disqualify anyone who watched or enjoyed "American/Pop Idol" from voting or judging.  Still, I fear the results of the competition would not be to your (or my) liking.  "Indie Rock Idol" would be a show where all the people who didn't even sign up to compete on the show would win automatically.  Everyone who tried to enter the contest would be the rejects.

Good point. Plus, if there was one, Indie Rock Idol would probably be rubbish. Theres a lot of crap out there; a load of talentless, unbareably pretentious students not singing per se, just moaning slightly melodically along with one acoustic guitar played badly. But there's not really such a thing as indie rock now is there? I mean, there are bands described as indie who are in magazines and are signed to Sony or whatever. So its more like a genre.

There is such thing as indie rock, but it just depends on how you define indie, it could be a genre it could be a group of artists who refuse to sell out and have abstract music. Its like punk, its more in the persons personal opinion of what it is because the category is so broad, like some people don't consider good charlotte punk becuase they are on mtv, i consider them punk because to me it's all in how you sound, so really its up to the individual to decide.

Technically speaking, any music not financed by Universal, EMI, BMG, Warner, or Sony is independant.
