Here's another question about RAS CDs for you guys, kinda related to the last one: do you think more people would buy our Best Of Request Vol.1 CD (or any other compilation CD, for that matter), if the songs weren't available for free download on the site?  What if we only provided clips or lower quality preview versions on the site instead?

Probably, but you'd lose a lot of listeners that are too cheap or don't have the money to buy the CD.

Yay! Color!

Stick with the current methodology.

I'm not being sarcastic here -- are you suggesting that we should never make money with RAS?  If most of our future listeners don't or won't have the money to spend on CDs or other things we sell, quite frankly, RAS won't last very long.  What you said is kinda like saying that some company will "lose" customers that never bought anything anyway because the customers are too cheap to buy their products.  In other words, if the customers weren't buying anything, they weren't really customers to begin with, and are not of much real value to the company.  So they wouldn't really be "losing" those customers, since they never had them to begin with.  The goal is to convert the non-paying "customers" into paying ones in order for the company to survive.  Of course, at RAS, our listeners are much more to us than just customers (perhaps because 99% of them have never bought anything from us anyway Smiley ), but I hope you understand what I mean.  We have to plan to stay afloat somehow if we want to be doing this for more than a couple of years.

Or perhaps you mean that losing those listeners would be bad because they might be able to support us monitarily (by buying something) some time in the future?

Thanks for your thoughts, guys.  I just like to air out different ideas with you all on the forum.  Don't want to do anything too drastic..

I like the idea of album-only versions of certain songs.  Maybe flesh out certain songs a bit.

Not a bad idea.  I'll definitely keep it in mind as I'm recording.

Like I had said, you can make it a BoR CD with 1 or 2 added CD only Bonus Tracks.  That's probably your best bet.  However, you can do both CD only bonus tracks and extend one of your songs.  That would be killer!

I'd say your best bet is advertisements. You might also want to try getting people to mirror you site.
